Suncoast Market Food Co-op is a full-service grocery store located in Imperial Beach, CA with a focus on locally sourced and organic foods. As a consumer cooperative, the Co-op is owned by over 1400 households in San Diego County and has a commitment to strengthening the economic, social, and environmental fabric of our community. After 9 years of community organizing and fundraising, the market is scheduled to open in early 2026. Suncoast’s vision is a healthy community, with access to quality food, in a vibrant and welcoming market, where anyone can be an owner and everyone can shop. POSITION SUMMARY:
Manages the operations of the retail departments and front-end including scheduling, staffing, training, customer service and all retail operations. Works with the GM and Department Leads to ensure department and retail oversight. Work towards ensuring the Co-op’s mission and adhering to the Co-op’s code of conduct.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Work with GM to ensure department and staff standards are met and upheld
- Work with Department Leads to ensure “World Class Customer Service” on the sales floor
- Maintain training schedules and document all training
- Day to day hands on management of Retail Department’s, subcategories, Front End and staff
- Establish and maintain Retail procedures for best practices and direction by the GM to meet the needs of the store
- Keep current on all safety regulations (Local, State, Federal), update any store policies to ensure compliance with most current regulations and requirements, develop and deliver training, develop training schedules, and maintain training records
- Ensure proper maintenance and cleanliness of the store’s equipment, retail floor, and staff spaces
- Develop and maintain a strong product knowledge
- Oversee Pricing for the Retail Departments
- Manage timekeeping, labor budgets and scheduling for Retail Departments
- Ensure coverage in retail departments as needed
- Hire, train, develop, supervise, motivate, direct and discipline all retail staffE
- nsure appropriate employee performance documentation
Work with Department and POS Leads to:
- Ensure sales goals are met, margin goals are met and ensure pricing audits are conducted
- Review price comparisons to determine Every Day Low Price (EDLPs)
- Coordinate broker buys and ensures excellent product selection
- Review the needs of subcategories
Collaborates with Retail Leads to:
- Ensure retail clerk training needs are met
- Ensure ordering and receiving is done by leads correctly and timely
- Ensure the retail floor is clean, organized and according to the highest standards of cleanliness and according to written policy, procedures and internal company standards
- Ensure shelves are consistently full of relevant products as developed by policies, procedures and internal company standards
- Ensure tags and signage is placed where necessary
- Set goals for Professional Development
Hiring, Training and Development:
- Collaborate hiring needs to GM in a timely manner
- Partner with GM to conduct retail interviews, as needed
- Administer retail reviews in a timely manner. Partner with GM for support
- Ensure, provide, and maintain retail training and training processes
- Provide consistent professional development to all retail staff
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Minimum 3 years retail management experience, or equivalent. Coop and / or natural foods experience preferred
- Minimum 5 years working in retail stores, preferably grocery and perishable departments
- Able to work a flexible schedule to support business needs, including evenings, weekends, and holidays. Dependable attendance is required
- Ability to provide friendly, professional external and internal customer service in a fast-paced environment
- Ability to calmly and professionally handle multiple demands, prioritize effectively, and problem solve within established guidelines
- Able to respond appropriately to changes in direction or unexpected situations
- Ability to work effectively independently as well as within a team
- Ability to communicate well with others
- Willingness and ability to meet the changing needs of the job
- Computer literacy required
Ability to:
- Manage employees by training, coaching, review process and disciplinary actions
- Conduct oneself in a professional manner with all customers, staff and visitors
- Follow all policies and procedures
- Handle multiple demands with a positive attitude

- Assist in other departments, as needed and supports store sales goals and program
- Demonstrates strong interpersonal, communication (verbal and written), active listening, proactive problem solving, organizational, time management and follow through skills
